Woody fought for 4 hours under heavy fire at the Battle of Iwo Jima and used an improvised flamethrower to eliminate several Japanese strongholds, paving the way for victory in that battle.
The original of this map was created in 1944 as the planning map for the invasion of Iwo Jima. It shows expected initial routes of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Marine Divisions, with the prediction it would be over in 4 days.
