The Battle of Baton Rouge was fought on 5 August 1862 as the Confederates under Breckenridge attempted to retake the state capital of Louisiana. Their initial attack was going well but in the end was repulsed by Union soldiers and gunboats in the Mississippi River. The Union Army had occupied the city since capturing the city in May 1862.
