The Virginia and second Confederate capital was surrendered to Union forces under Major General Godfrey Weitzel on 2 April 1865. The Confederate government and remaining soldiers fled Richmond the night before and burned part of the city as they departed.

This map gives a detailed view of the relevant topographical features surrounding the city as well as street names and buildings of importance in the city.
