The Virginia and second Confederate capital was surrendered to Union forces under Major General Godfrey Weitzel on 2 April 1865. The Confederate government and remaining soldiers fled Richmond the night before and burned part of the city as they departed.

This map focuses on the many fortifications defending the city of Richmond. Along the right saw is a brief history of Richmond and a list of the forts protecting the city.
