Also known as Fort Monroe, this fort  at the tip of the Virginia Peninsula has the rare distinction of a fort in a Confederate state that was held by the Union for the entire Civil War. Confederate President Jefferson Davis was imprisoned at the Fortress after the war for two years. 

This drawing takes a birds eye view of Fortress Monroe from the north looking south. There is a legend explaining the important features in the area.
