Iwo Jima Naval Bombardment Battle Map

The Battle of Iwo Jima was fought from 19 February to 26 March 1945 in the Volcano Islands (more broadly the Bonin Islands), about 750 miles (1,200 kilometers) south of Tokyo. The battle was fought entirely by the US Marines and Navy. Iwo Jima has the distinction of causing more casualties for the Americans than the Japanese. Iwo Jima has been immortalized as Joe Rosenthal took one of the most famous pictures in the history of the world, "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima."

This map shows the bombardment area of responsibility for the naval ships supporting the Marines on Iwo Jima. Ammo allotment is also shown. Note three ships involved in the operation-USS Tennessee and Nevada, who were at Battleship Row on 7 December 1941 at Pearl Harbor. USS Indianapolis, which transported parts of the first atomic bomb to Tinian later in 1945, was sunk as it continued on to the Philippines is shown. The sinking of the Indianapolis was largest single loss of life from one ship in the history of the US Navy, with 1,195 dying (most died after surviving the sinking but were not rescued in time), which was 18 more than the USS Arizona.
