Tikrit, Iraq 2007 City Topographical Map
Map of Tikrit, Iraq and the surrounding area. Tikrit is located about 90 miles (225 kilometers) north of Baghdad along the Tigris River. In 2003, it was thought that Saddam Hussein would make a last stand in the city of his birth (he was born just outside of Tikrit), but that did not materialize. Once Tikrit fell, major offensive combat for the initial invasion phase basically came to a close. Saddam was eventually captured just south of Tikrit in December 2003.
