The Battle of Tarawa was fought from 20-23 November 1943 at Betio Island, Tarawa Atoll, Gilbert Islands in the central Pacific. This was the first amphibious landing of the war where the Japanese opposed the landing at the beaches. Many Marine amphibious vehicles got stuck 500 yards out from the beach on the reefs, forcing Marines to wade ashore under withering Japanese fire. Tarawa's Japanese commander, Rear Admiral Keiji Shibazaki, said of Tarawa's defenses it would take "one million men one hundred years" to take Tarawa. The 2nd Marine Division and elements of the Army's 27th Infantry Division did it in three days.

The hand drawn map shows the landings and subsequent movement of Marine regiments during the battle along with the lines at the end of each day.
