The Virginia and second Confederate capital was surrendered to Union forces under Major General Godfrey Weitzel on 2 April 1865. The Confederate government and remaining soldiers fled Richmond the night before and burned part of the city as they departed.

This hand drawn map of Richmond shows the main city area with radius distances to the surrounding areas. Forts and other defensive works are marked. Roads, distances, and farms are included.
