Iraq Battle Maps (1991-2011)

The lead up to the Gulf War started on 2 August 1990 when Iraq invaded and occupied Kuwait. In response, American and Coalition forces built up their battle capabilities in Operation Desert Shield until the First Gulf War commenced on 17 January 1991. Predominantly an air war, the ground war was fought for 4 days (100 hours) leading to the ending of hostilities on 28 February 1991 after Coalition forces liberated Kuwait and had started taking Iraqi territory.

The second war in Iraq started on 20 March 2003 (19 March in the US) with Operation Iraqi Freedom in which American and Coalition forces fought their way from Kuwait to Baghdad to Tikrit, as well as American Airborne landing in northern Iraq. The invasion phase of the war ended on 30 April 2003. Fighting continued in Iraq until the official end of Operation Iraqi Freedom on 15 December 2011.
